Great Old-Fashioned Colorado Ski Town
Long ago, Crested Butte was a gathering place for Ute Indians and later, in the mid-1800s, it evolved into a prosperous mining town high in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Then, beginning in the l960s, Crested Butte Mountain Resort was created and a special breed of skiers arrived!
This was just the beginning of a glorious time for the town as people arrived from all over the country, and the world, to experience the freedom, exuberance, entertainment and welcoming atmosphere that has always been legendary in this mountain town.
Located about a four-hour drive from Denver, the town can also be reached by flying into the nearby Gunnison Airport and taking a shuttle into town.
Once you arrive, you will find that there are two towns that make up Crested Butte. First, there’s the historic town with its small town feel and then there is Crested Butte Mountain Resort, which is a beautiful ski resort built on the close-by mountain.
In the town, you will find great lodging, restaurants, bars, galleries and shops. You will feel like you’ve stepped into a different world, one where the local people are friendly, environmentally-concerned, sometimes quirky and always fun.
At this mountain resort, you will find a first-class ski and snowboard area with all the winter and summer amenities and activities that you would expect.
The Mountain Resort has a base altitude of 9,375 feet (2,856 meters) and a summit altitude of 12,162 feet (3,707 meters) with 1,167 skiiable acres.
There are 16 lifts including four high speed detachable quads, two fixed grip quads, two triple chairs, three double chairs, three surface lifts and two magic carpet lifts.
Altogether, there are 121 trails, divided into 23% designed for beginners, 57% intermediate and 20% advanced. That makes this ski resort a great place to learn to ski because you can go easily from one level to the next as you progress.
But, the big draw for this resort is that there are 448 acres of double black runs. This is a very large amount of extreme skiing terrain and, as a result, the US Extreme Skiing Championships and the X Games have been held here. The draw for extreme skiers to Crested Butte has been irresistible and many live in town.
In the town of Crested Butte there is a Nordic Center which has an ice skating rink as well as many miles of groomed cross country skiing trails, another very popular winter sport in this area.
If you’re looking for fantastic terrain parks, this is the place to come.
- Before you venture onto the more extreme features at The Cascade, why not warm up at Keystone Park and Painter Boy Terrain Park.
- The Cascade, with a jib park and half pipe, is a great spot to board in the afternoon because the light is so good. The Superpipe, which can be found in this park, is absolutely huge at 55 feet wide, 18 feet high and with a 17 degree slope.
In summer, mountain biking is very popular, along with hiking, backpacking, whitewater rafting and fishing.
